The NGO ASTOVOT, like all associations in Togo, receives no subsidy from the Togolese government. It is the volunteers participation fees that enable ASTOVOT to finance its projects. The cost of participation in volunteer work camps is aO220 per person for 2 to 3 weeks. This contribution covers: accommodation costs; food; accompaniment of the group; administrative costs; purchase of materials and equipment for the project, and other steps involved in setting up volunteers on the project site. The funds contributed by the volunteers are divided as follows: 3/4 for the organisation of project activities and 1/4 for the administrative management of ASTOVOT. The languages of the project are French and then English. However, we recommend that volunteers who are not French-speaking have a basic knowledge of French before they arrive, as the official language of Togo is French. The vast majority of local volunteers and local communities have a very poor level of English.

THEME: GENDER SENSITIVITY: FOCUS ON FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)Female genital mutilation is a strong tradition in this community. It is illegal. But still more than one third of the women are circumcised and each and every young woman is subjected to the cut. The church has preached against FGM for decades but in spite of the deep devoutness the priests do not have enough power over the souls.FGM has nothing to do with religion; it is a so-called culture and tradition in certain groups. The practice is deeply rooted in views on chastity, transition to womanhood, purity for marriage and basically a wish to control women sexually. In certain areas the survival and fertility of the local community is assumed to be threatened if the girls are not circumcised. Many brave young girls who refuse FGM are regarded as unmarriageable and become outcasts.It is a brutal act, painful and has led to the spread of HIV/AIDS. This project is organized for local children by The Language School In Down-Town and the non-profit educational association Alternative Language Programs Satellite (ALPS) as part of their annual activities on multicultural issues for youth. Some international teenage participants will join. The common project s aim is to introduce the diversity of world cultures to children and provide them with good practices in intercultural communication using the learning-by-doing method and organizing alternative English language practice. The project gets youngsters familiar with customs and traditions of the countries from all over the world and encourages them to develop their cross-cultural thinking and tolerance as well as global thinking and individual initiative. This summer we offer you to participate in our new project called MATRIX . Camp participants will learn about different meanings of this word. Together, we will identify the ways how to improve the matrix of the modern world, how to become a better version of ourselves and how to develop our emotional intelligence. Camp participants will acquire life skills that they will need to create their own codes for personal matrices that will have power to change their life for the better. They are the smart matrices of our personalities, souls, love and success, well-being and happy life. Meetings with local and/or international professionals in the field will take place. Thematic photo and video contests for camp participants will be organized.

TRAVAIL

The activities to be held by a team of volunteers may include the following: playing the games and performing music that are popular in the countries the volunteers represent; training kids to perform pieces of amateur drama; preparing festivals; providing intellectual and sport games as well as discussions; preparing quests to combine with excursions round the places of interest; organizing actions for peace and nature protection; leading and supporting kids in their work on the team projects within the topics related to the main theme of the summer. Volunteers are responsible for the day activities in the camp. The work can be quite heavy, involving long working hours, requiring high level of commitment and responsibility. You will stay with campers from 10:00 to 17:00 (45-minute lunch is included) and spend about another hour to prepare and finalize next day activities and feedback. Working days are from Monday to Friday plus one duty Saturday; Sundays are days off except the one after arrival. The local participants are mainly youngsters from minority groups of Tallinn whose family s languages include Russian. Based on the previous year, we expect a number of kids and teen participants in one camp shift as up to 40. Volunteers will work in pairs facilitating and leading a smaller group of 10 – 12 children or less during the day and change the groups every 2-3 days.During the first three days of the camp right after arrival, volunteers will be given a training on the camp methodology and some time to prepare themselves to meet the kids/teens on Monday and further carry out their tasks in the camp. For this reason, it is important to arrive on time.

Some trips to nearby places such as Ahtari Zoo and to expereince Seinajoki nightlife are also organized for volunteers.

SITUATION

Jalasjarvi is a community of about 8000 people in Ostrobothnia in western Finland. The nearest town is Seinajoki, which is also the most convenient to reach by train from Helsinki. Remarque

The funds contributed by the volunteers are divided as follows: 3/4 for the organisation of project activities and 1/4 for the administrative management of ASTOVOT.The languages of the project are French and then English. However, we recommend that volunteers who are not French-speaking have a basic knowledge of French before they arrive, as the official language of Togo is French. The vast majority of local volunteers and local communities have a very poor level of English.

PARTENAIRE

The NGO Association Togolaise des Volontaires au Travail (ASTOVOT) has more than 60 years of experience in international voluntary service. Each year, it welcomes many volunteers from all over the world on short, medium and long term volunteer projects (3 weeks to 12 months) in Togo. These projects allow the national volunteers (about 200) to work hand in hand with the international volunteers and to create a real intercultural exchange throughout the year. ASTOVOT is a member of the Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service (CCIVSUNESCO) and of the Network of Africa Voluntary Organizations (NAVO), and is in partnership with several volunteer organizations in Europe, Asia, the United States, Canada and Africa. Its projects focus on community development through the promotion of education and citizenship, health, social, environmental protection and intercultural learning, renovation and construction of socio-community infrastructures.

TRAVAIL

In the village of GapE-AvElEbE, as in most of the landlocked villages of Togo, sanitary and hygienic conditions are considerably below standard. In the absence of latrines, local people are forced to defecate in the open air and in the bush. This exposes them to parasitic diseases and bites from reptiles such as snakes. At the request of the Village Development Committee (VDC), ASTOVOT proposed to initiate the construction of ECOSAN latrines in a participatory and inclusive approach with the local village authorities. The aim of the camp is to make at least two ECOSAN latrine cubicles available to the local population of the village, to help improve the village s sanitation system.OBJECTIVES?-To improve the sanitary conditions of villagers As part of this project, the village will provide volunteers with materials such as sand, gravel and water, as well as manpower if required. This is their contribution to the project. ASTOVOT and its volunteers will in turn provide cement, sheet metal, pipes, carpentry, manpower and other materials. -Identification of locations for the construction of Ecosan latrines;-Mobilising the resources needed for the construction work;-Assist the mason and carpenter in the construction of the latrines; Organisation of awareness-raising sessions on the maintenance of Ecosan latrines and the use of its composts; -Organising the handover ceremony for the Ecosan latrines built in the village;

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

Accommodation is generally basic, simple and specific to the project location. On site, volunteers are accommodated in groups of three or four people per room. The number of people per room depends on how the volunteers themselves organise the group. In some places, volunteers can use dry toilets and showers without water inside. This means that volunteers will have to fetch water from a fountain or well. The association provides volunteers with plastic or foam mats. Volunteers who have sleeping bags can bring them with them if possible. Access to drinking water on site.During the work camp, the volunteers will cook their own meals. An internal organisation will create groups that will alternate to carry out the various domestic tasks domestic tasks, including cooking. The food products used for cooking are imported, local and organic. The diet of each volunteer will be taken into taken into account when preparing meals. Volunteers will have access to tropical fruit such as bananas, oranges, pineapples, mangs, avocados, papayas, etc.Along side the main activities of the work camp, other activities are organised, such as discovery walks, hikes, festive outings and cultural encounters. These activities enable the volunteers to come into contact with the local population and to discover Togolese culture.

The area has a single CollEge d Enseignement GEnEral (CEG) for 4 villages: AvElEbE AvEgan, LokodopE and KpEvE.
