Worldwide Friends (WF), was founded in 2001 as a non-profit organization promoting nature and peace-oriented activities for volunteers wanting to spend some time in Iceland. Our main theme for this year is to give education about the 17 Sustainable Goals of the United Nations and to clean the whole coastline of Iceland. The main activities that we offer are workcamps, seminars, local events, and exchange programs suitable both for young people and adults.

TRAVAIL

The heart of the SElheimar ideology is to give all individuals a fair chance and to maximize their potential. By focusing on individuals possibility instead of their limitations, SElheimar aims to create the space for each resident to take every opportunity that arises for each person to grow and develop. Versatility is the strength of SElheimar so people with special needs that reside here will always be the center of the community. This works through the idea of reverse integration: those without special needs adapt to the abilities of those who do, they can work together to make their community of an equal and sustainable one. The foundation of the ideology of SElheimar derives from the visions and lifework of Sesselja herself. The main work in this camp will be in forestry called Eilur and also in the greenhouses which are called Sunna. Volunteers will be working in the greenhouses planting and harvesting vegetables, doing weed control and sometimes you will also be gardening. The work might involve work around the property painting or fixing things. During the winter volunteers will also have to help remove snow and keep the walk paths clear for the residents.Working hours are 09.00 to 16.00 with one hour break for lunch and there are some coffee breaks as well. Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you dont like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change. It is a community where people with or without special needs live and work together. SElheimar is a pioneer of practicing organic farming. In SElheimar there is an organically certified greenhouse, forestry, and arboretum. Other environmental-friendly projects in SElheimar include geothermal energy and recycling.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends in SElheimar. The house is across the village and has 4 double rooms with a private bathroom each, a fully equipped kitchen, and common areas. The common areas are shared with some of the local workers.Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bags, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits and amp; vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. We try to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet by cutting down our meat intake and we usually encourage volunteers to try more sustainable foods.

SITUATION

SElheimar, Icelands first and only eco-village, is located in southwest Iceland, 80 kilometres long (50 miles) east of ReykjavEk. The area around the house is great for hiking. We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre ( the form of introduction is up to you Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers. WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs. Golden Circle is Included in the camp feeThis workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning. The area around the house is also great for hiking. Remarque

The NGO ASTOVOT, like all associations in Togo, receives no subsidy from the Togolese government. It is the volunteers participation fees that enable ASTOVOT to finance its projects. The cost of participation in volunteer work camps is aO220 per person for 2 to 3 weeks. This contribution covers: accommodation costs; food; accompaniment of the group; administrative costs; purchase of materials and equipment for the project, and other steps involved in setting up volunteers on the project site. The funds contributed by the volunteers are divided as follows: 3/4 for the organisation of project activities and 1/4 for the administrative management of ASTOVOT. The languages of the project are French and then English. However, we recommend that volunteers who are not French-speaking have a basic knowledge of French before they arrive, as the official language of Togo is French. The vast majority of local volunteers and local communities have a very poor level of English.

PARTNET : Ala is a promotion association specializing in activities for youth and adults in rural areas. The focus of its work is in Sabina, an agricultural area north of Rome (40 km) where it has made local development and youth policies its main vocation. The association works to build the idea of an inclusive educational community where everyone has the opportunity to find the space to express themself, outside of any judgment, social or political. Daily it deals with youth aggregation, active citizenship and participation, reception and receptivity, local development for sustainable tourism, and redevelopment of spaces abandoned or disused public spaces.PROJECT : Since 2014 Ala has managed the Cognolo Refuge, a mid-mountain mountain hut, brought back to life from a situation of degradation and abandonment, where it carries out hospitality, educational activities, experiences related to nature, and the enhancement of the territory. Running a refuge is an act of care for this rural area, offering an active garrison over the mountain area and facilitating access to the hinterland for all, making known the beauty of these mountains. The day-to-day management of the refuge requires constant maintenance and renovation, which is why the camp focuses on this space by offering volunteers the experience of living in a mountain refuge in its wildness and using this space as a place for experimentation where they can express their creativity and rediscovering the value of manual skills and traditional knowledge. By joining this workcamp you will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals: SustainableCommunities -SDG11, SustainableConsuption Production-SDG12

TRAVAIL

Volunteers will work on the maintenance of the space and area around Cognolo Refuge (maintenance of trails, construction, and restoration of terraces, collection of wood for the winter season, construction of tables, chairs, or other necessary elements, maintenance and cleaning of the spaces, making tent pitches, fire areas etc…). Volunteer could discover the area by exploring flora and fauna local, learning about animal tracks and more. Group life, shared management of cooking, cleaning, and convivial moments between games, excursions, and experiences.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

The group is housed in tents in the camping area around the shelter. The shelter and spaces inside are used by staff for cooking and rain emergencies. Scarcity of resources – the shelter has electricity. Spartan housing to keep with shared bathrooms, compost toilets, and solar showers. Management of space cleaning and meal preparation will be handled by volunteers themselves through cleaning/cooking shifts. The group will have access to a pantry based on which to build a weekly menu respecting allergies/intolerances and diet particulars.

SITUATION

The camp takes place at 1000m, is accessible by hiking, and takes volunteers to immerse themselves in a dimension outside the usual. It requires a high sense of adaptation, the ability to disconnect from digital devices and an internet connection, desire to disconnect from everyday life to connect with a life more in relationship with the people one has around and nature.

SITUATION

Videy or Wood Island is the largest (1.7 km2) island in the Kollafjordur Bay, just outside Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Videy was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. There is a regular ferry connection between the island and the harbour of Reykjavik. The island is only a few hundred metres away from the city and the trip takes a few minutes. This makes Videy so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also features intriguing sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard Serras work Afangar and Yoko Onos its Imagine Peace column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Videy are related to archaeological research.

Maki is located in a very isolated area (not accessible for cars and we have to walk 4 km in the mountains), so it once became an abandon village in 1970s and then, was revived by Kyodo Gakusha. Over 10 people incl. 2 families were living till several years ago, but less and less in these years (almost nobody in the winter), so vols. are needed even moreTateya is located on the hilly (less than Maki, but still a bit isolated) area where 30-40 members live and mainly do rice farming as well as growing cows and chicken.Outcome of this workcamp: In 2023, we had 4 short term workcamps and 1 LMTV project with 13 vols. who greatly contributed to their protecting the houses, farming and caring animals that was difficult to finish by the time they needed without volunteers See the long-term goal of this project as Local SDGs made by the previous project leader at https://www.slideshare.net/nice-workcamp/2019-ep3-188767935 (only in Japanese, sorry, but you can still enjoy the pictures)

This project is actively working for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDGs 10 (Reduced Inequalities), organized together with Kyodo Gakusha since 2000, a cooperative community where people with various backgrounds such as mentally disadvantaged, people who are tired of city life, who want to learn farming, who want to live in the nature, etc. They have 5 communities in Japan incl. Maki and Tateya and grow animals and vegetables in ecological, organic way. Maki is located in a very isolated area (not accessible for cars and we have to walk 4 km in the mountains), so it once became an abandon village in 1970s and then, was revived by Kyodo Gakusha. Over 10 people incl. 2 families were living till several years ago, but less and less in these years (almost nobody in the winter), so vols. are needed even moreOutcome of this workcamp: In 2023, we had 4 short term workcamps and 1 LMTV project with 13 vols. who greatly contributed to their protecting the houses, farming and caring animals that was difficult to finish by the time they needed without volunteers See the long-term goal of this project as Local SDGs made by the previous project leader at https://www.slideshare.net/nice-workcamp/2019-ep3-188767935 (only in Japanese, sorry, but you can still enjoy the pictures)
