SITUATION

Monsagro is a small village located in the district Salamanca (Castilla y Leon). It has a population of around 140 inhabitants, but due to its peaceful beauty and ideal climate, this rises to around 1000 in the summer months. It is located in the national park Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia, and it belongs to the former Las Batuecas National Hunting Reserve, made up of various neighbouring towns. It is located around 90km from Salamanca, the region s capital, 33km from Ciudad Rodrigo (to which it belongs in administrative terms), and 300km from Madrid. You can easily get to Salamanca/Ciudad Rodrigo on buses that leave daily from Monsagro. Monsagro has 1 primary school with 5 pupils during the winter, with the number increasing to about 50/60 during the summer months. It has a brand new interactive fossil museum that opened this year, as well as marine fossils over 400 million years old embedded all round the village, such as on paths and on the walls of houses. Not to be missed It also has 1 communal library, a botanical garden, a recreational centre for the elderly, amongst other things. It is quite a small place that is fairly isolated. This means that if you are coming from a bustling city, or even a large town, you will likely experience a bit of a culture shock .

his is the thirteenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organizes series of International Photo marathons, while we started organising camps for teenagers in the year 2010. Throughout the year participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-related learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help the participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations as well as developing conceptual frameworks which progress the participants individual style.

TRAVAIL

When the workshop ends, we select some of our best pictures from the camp and prepare those images for an informal online exhibition. While learning about photography the participants explore Icelandic culture by taking part in it, capturing it and also by displaying their work during the camps. One of our objectives is to deliver environmental as well as cultural messages and draw the attention through pictures made in the camp.Participants should be prepared for walking and visually exploring the city streets and working within a flexible time schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions. Participants should arrive ready to shoot and should bring with them their own digital cameras, lenses, laptops and tripodes if possible. Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a regular work camp; we may be able to organize some outdoor voluntary work but it depends on our partners and the weather. Participants should use the opportunity to share about their own culture or country, such as food, music, games or films with the international group. This camp is open to participants aged 16 to 20 years, during their stay SEEDS organises a programme that combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland, its culture, and having fun while exploring the capital city and some of the most stunning nature attractions in the Golden Circle and the South Shore excursions. The camp happens around the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets and the nights are almost as bright as the days. The nights are magical and staying awake enjoying the surroundings is a unique experience.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

The house includes basic facilities such as showers, washing machine, kitchen and everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. The group will sleep in shared rooms and participants shall bring their own sleeping bag. Participants from other camps may also stay in the house. Participants will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. In this project SEEDS volunteers will be mostly doing construction, working with stones, repairing or marking off hiking trails and walking paths in the East of Iceland. Some of the trails and paths are located in an isolated area of mountains and fjords. The working area of Hjaroarhagi, Magnahellir and Laugavellir is within driving distance from Egilsstaoir which is the largest city/town in the East of the country. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging them and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Theme: THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES: The duty to Protect, Respect, Promote and Fulfill AGE: Volunteers have to be at least 18 years old to participate in the work camp. There is no upper age limit.Project overviewThe School is still at the initial stages started in 2012 under Nyamosense Primary School and Nyamosense Catholic Church. The management is in the process of registering the institution with the Ministry of Social Services in Kubwaha. The inhabitants are Kuria speaking people residing in the South West of Kenya. Their economic mainstay is farming, where farmers grow tobacco, maize, beans, sweet potatoes and other horticultural crops for sale. Cattle and goat trade also take place but the volume of trade has gone very low owing to the incessant cases of cattle rustling between the Kuria people and the Maasai and Kipsigis of the neighboring Trans Mara district. The area has low levels of literacy especially among people aged from 35 years and above.PROJECT ActivitiesThe idea was prompted by the growing need to sensitive members of the local community on the plight of Children with disabilities, who continue to suffer neglect and denial as the society remains conservative and unwilling to attend to children with disabilities. Volunteers will work for six hours daily from Monday to Friday.TYPE OF WORK CAMP: KIDS/DISAManual work and Intercultural activities: -Teaching pupils at the Special Unit School -Care and support of orphans-Interacting with children with disabilities-Learn how to use sign language-Brick making together with local community members -Open forums for discussion on children rights-Study lessons on retrogressive cultural practices like Female Genital Mutilation

SEEDS volunteers will be working again with the Reykjavik municipality in two of the main outdoors skiing and recreational areas in the capital region, Blafjoll (or the Blue Mountains) and Skalafell. In Skalafell the ski slopes are turned into a bike park during summertime and mountain bike enthusiasts can nourish their passion. The main tasks will include renovation and maintenance work on the bike trails; mainly raking and scraping them up. Other possible tasks may be related to general cleaning of the area.

TRAVAIL

In the Blue Mountains, the main tasks will be maintaining the slopes and preparing them for the next ski season. The city and a few sports associations run lodges and mountain huts there and they might also need some renovation jobs, such as painting and/or cleaning. The working plan is flexible and it will depend on the needs of our local hosts. No previous experience is necessary but the work is demanding and requires a good physical condition. As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The landscape is raw and volunteers need to be motivated to work outdoors and to experience isolated mountain areas. The camp happens around the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets and the nights are almost as bright as the days. The bright nights are magical and staying awake and enjoying the beautiful surroundings is a unique experience. During the time of the camp participants will have the opportunity to experience the midnight sun as there are 24 hours of light even if the sun sets for shorts periods of time.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

SEEDS volunteers will stay in one of the ski lodges in the mountains and sleep in a sleeping bag accommodation, sharing rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional/typical food, drinks, music and recipes from your country for the international evening.

SITUATION

The skiing areas of Blafjoll and Skalafell are both about 30 minutes drive away from the city. Blafjoll is south-west of the city and Skalafell is located to the east of Reykjavik. Both areas have great slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding as well as tracks for cross-country skiing. Blafjoll has 16 lifts and Skalafell has 4 lifts. The sports area in Skalafell is situated between the elevations of 380 and 700 m.The Blue Mountain range stretches to the west from the mountain Vifilsfell near the main road (1) from the capital area to the South-western lowlands. The highest mountain in the range reaches 600 m and in 1968 the district became a very popular skiing resort among Icelanders. The areas are excellent for recreation, not only for alpine and cross country skiing, but outdoor activities as well such as hiking and mountain biking. Nature lovers are certain to find something they like there, but it s important to be careful crossing the rugged lava fields because of the numerous caves underneath. The locations of the camp are remote and isolated, even though still close to the city. Free time activities in the surroundings are mostly hiking and trekking. Other excursions (Golden Circle, South Shore, Hot River hike or Snaefellsnes Peninsula) can be arranged at discount fares for SEEDS participants in case there is additional free time after work or during the weekends.

BESOIN SPÉCIAL

Volunteers shall be prepared for physical outdoors work and should bring good working shoes and clothes. In the mountains, the weather can change quickly and drastically. Even if it is summer, the weather can be cold or rainy. We recommend to bring good walking shoes/boots, warm and/or waterproof clothes (underlayers, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats) as most of the tasks and activities take place outside. English will be the language in the camp; basic conversational skills are needed.
