St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School and Childrens Centre started as place where orphaned, homeless and abandoned children were rescued and provided with shelter, food and a place to call home. Brother John started by gathering children, rehabilitating and relocating them into schools, but later realized it was becoming difficult in some cases as existing schools didnt want to integrate children from the street into their classrooms. This necessitated, in part, starting the school, which in just four years he transformed the little used residence, owned by the Order of St. Charles Lwanga, into classrooms, a dormitory, dining hall .The students, all former street kids living a difficult life in crime-ridden neighborhoods, now proudly wear their schools uniform and call the Childrens Centre home. The children were rescued from the dumps and slums of Nairobi and given a chance to gain an education and end the cycle of poverty and homelessness. Today they are provided with a safe place to live, a reliable source of nutritious food and the opportunity to gain high school education with the possibility of post-secondary education. Brother John hopes that with donations to the Centre, he and his team can build a bigger school with an integrated approach to nurture children through academics to become responsible citizens of the world.

Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous area where people are highly dependent on agriculture to complement their living in addition to their daily work. However, due to shortage of water and small terraces on sloppy land the agriculture is unsustainable and farm output is not sufficient keeping in mind economic value it gets. Also due to steep terrain and small terraces automated machines have limited usage here. As a result we fear food security in the future as many people are or about to leave agriculture.RUCHI campus is spread over an area of 3 hectares and has good fertile soil. We at present are using our campus for exploring options of pesticide free scientific farming using natural materials. We have successfully demonstrated, Wormicompost, NADEP compost, Kitchen Gardening, Agroforestry, floriculture, organic farming, orchard development here. At present we are gearing to install hydroponics system at our campus for demonstration, training and self sufficiency. In due course we

THEME: HUMAN AND WILDLIFE CONFLICT THE BANE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTThis phenomenon of human beings and wildlife conflict is very controversial and has attracted the attention of all and sundry. The scenario is prompted by the proximity of the local community to the Tsavo National Park that is the home to wildlife and this directly plays into the hands of the local community members who are forced by the circumstances to learn to live with the situation and the attendant challenges.Working with community groups on poverty reduction and sustainable development will involve the active involvement in projects that are geared towards youth and women empowerment activities, HIV/AIDS awareness, provision of infrastructure in learning institutions. Poverty is a major issue in the local community and is directly linked to the spread of HIV/AIDS because poverty drives HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS drives poverty. This highlights the need for a multifaceted response to both problems, but particularly
