PROJECT LOCATIONThe project is located Kuria East district curved off the expansive Kuria district in South Western Kenya. The area is highly populated due to its strategic situation and suffers due to poor infrastructure especially the road network which has no tarmac.BACKGROUND INFORMATION- KEBAROTI HEALTH CENTERThe health center is a community initiative that is currently run by the Ministry of health and has one medical personnel posted by the Government and volunteers who are on and offThe center offers curative, preventative and promotion services.Water is available from streams, rain water occasionally harvested and volunteers have the opportunity to learn to live in adversity and especially when Kenya grapples with the poverty challenge that is the single most obstacle to sustainable development.OBJECTIVEThe main objective of the project is to provide health care to the community using locally available resources. The empowerment program reaches out to ensure that the local community is integrated into the day to day activities and the role of the volunteers is to play the role of the catalyst to re-activate the process.LANGUAGE OF THE PROJECT/REGION Basically, Kuria community occupies a good part of South Western Kenya and the majority of the Kuria speaking people can be found in Tanzania that boarders the districtKi-Kuria is the common language spoken but Kiswahili language is commonly used due to the cosmopolitan nature of the region that is the gateway to Tanzania through Migori and Isebania townships. The old folks in the community may appear conservative due to their penchant for cultural and traditional upbringing and may be hesitant to embrace ideas generated by the relatively younger generation. They will stand out as unique by virtue of their command of the local language and folklore. In some cases, those who had no access to formal education can only be communicated to through translators.Volunteers are encouraged to reach out to this precious generation that is more than a University as they have a reservoir of knowledge that is unmatched and useful for posterity.Project staff speaks three languages Ki-Kuria, Kiswahili and English.CHALLENGESHigh poverty levelsUnemploymentDrug and alcohol abuse among the youthHigh rural/urban migration especially among the menHIV/AIDS pandemic prevalenceFemale Genital Mutilation (FGM) that is rampant in the area due to cultural Kuria and Maasai scramble for resources including the sporadic cattle theft among the two communities.EMPOWERMENT OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)FGM is a very controversial issue among the Kuria people and the practice remains predominant despite the glaring scientific evidence against the vice. Most parents even among the highly schooled still encourage their girls to undergo the dehumanizing rite of passage that continue to negatively affect the girl child in the area. There exist lobby groups in Kuria that champion the rights of the marginalized with some specifical

Remarque

Covid-19 has challenged our usual way of doing business and our dependency on digital technology is all time high. Having a digital footprint is no more a desire but a necessity for organizations. We have witnessed how people and organizations have used social media as a strong platform for awareness, networking, shopping, education, etc. We aim to introduce and empower children on digital media in a few select NFE centres. Covid pandemic had increased demand of smart phones for a living and online classes for children. However, due to lack of knowledge these phones are still underutilized. We expect volunteers to educate children and parents on use of these digital devices to optimize their performance.

Project backgroundCommunity health volunteers is a community health volunteers established back in 2008 by the local volunteers based in Kakamega County, this project is based within Shinyalu Sub County of Kakamega County with its main office at Virhembe market in shinyalu sub-county.The main purpose of this project was as a result of the immense destruction of kakamega forest by both the locals and outsiders.Kakamega Forest harbours immense and unique biodiversity due to its association with both lowland equatorial forest of central Africa and mountane forest of Kenya. Because of these unique contributions and island status, Kakamega Forest shows a high level of diversity and endemism The IUCN has put Kakamega Forest as a top priority for biodiversity conservation in East Africa. The key environmental problems in Kakamega forest ecosystem includes soil erosion, cultivation in riverbanks, deforestation and cutting down of tress, encroachment of forest boundaries, illegal and unsustainable harvest of forest products, high population growth rate increasing pressure on natural resource and food security.Land cover and historical analyses suggest that approximately 30 of the forest has been lost since it was gazetted in 1933 and 15 of indigenous forest with the gazetted kakamega forest was lost between 1972 and 2000, although most of the large clearing and logging has stoped since the 1980, there remains a very high demand by the local community for timber products
