ANANYA was started in March 1998, by a group of individuals concerned about the dearth of schools that provide relevant and meaningful education for the underprivileged children in and around Bangalore city. Even though the Indian constitution guarantees free and compulsory education to all children up to the age of 14, there are no schools that the poor can choose from. Either the schools are very good, but expensive or therefore beyond the reach of the underprivileged, or they are free but have poor physical facilities and offer a standard curriculum which is dull and boring. Most children, who drop out of school, do so because the schools do not cater to their special needs. Education in such critical context has no meaning or relevance to these children. It does not provide them with the required skills to overcome the social traumas or the emotional and physical hardships they face everyday.

TRAVAIL

MAIN ACTIVITIES : Our long term objectives are: To provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children so that they can realize their dream of getting a school leaving certificate and contributing to the development and growth of the society in general and their families in particular. The main purposes of the Trust are: To run unique schools ASK (Ananya Shikshana Kendra) that makes learning fun, relevant and meaningful for underprivileged children who are excluded from mainstream schools. To provide a platform ACT (Ananya Centre for Teachers) where people working with such children can meet to share experiences and ideas and create innovative teaching methods. VOLUNTEER TASKS : Teaching English, and other activities like plays, theatre, drawing, Painting, Games etc, The volunteer should have a willingness to teach children and work towards the overall development of poor children between the ages of 8 i 18, Who can help children in their school assignments, homework, Special coaching for Mathematics, Science and other subjects on a regular basis.

The local government and Educational Supervisor are fully behind our project, giving us access to many schools in the area. This program consists of working with students aged between 5 and 19, teaching language classes, usually English, although we can cater for French, German or Mandarin Chinese. Some of the larger schools have English teachers, but the teachers themselves often struggle. Participants will be free to choose their own way of teaching and may bring their own ideas into class. It is important to understand that the methods of teaching are less important than the attitude of the participant towards the students. In addition, the subjects to be taught can alter, depending on current activities in the schools which might include, for example, environmental issues or current festivals. The teaching program serves a dual purpose; of course it is meant to help children in rural Costa Rica to have a chance to learn another language with a mother tongue speaker, but it also benefits you, giving you an insight into the Costa Rican education system as well as an excellent opportunity to become good friends with students, teachers and even parents, and so take a full role in the community.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

About the Accommodation Your new home will be one of two newly built eco houses in our centre in Esparza: Jaguar House and Toucan House. The two houses sleep up to 22 people. Most rooms have bunk beds and are shared on a single gender. One room in each house has a bunk bed with a double bed below, single above, suitable for couples or small families, if needed. (Private rooms can be obtained at additional cost; this must be arranged before arriving for your program). All doors are lockable and we advise you, for added security, to make use of this when you leave your room. There is also a large dining hall/games room/communal area shared by both houses, with free WiFi, TV and table tennis, and a large garden of tropical plants, including coconut palm, papaya, banana, and citrus Food Arrangements Three meals a day on weekdays (two on weekends) are included during your stay. The meals will mainly be a mix of traditional and modern Costa Rican food, so you may experience the Costa Rican take on foods you will be familiar with. Most meals will include either fish, chicken, pork or beef, but vegetarians can be catered for.

SITUATION

Esparza is a medium-sized agricultural town nestled amongst the mountains above Rio Barranca, in the Central Pacific Coast area of Costa Rica. The area was first settled by the Chorotega and Huetar peoples. The Chorotega people fled from Mexico 1,500 years ago and brought their traditions with them. This is a possible reason why there are Mexican words which jump several countries and turn up again in Costa Rica. The Spanish town was founded in 1577, making it the second oldest in the country. It has a rich history which includes legends of hidden pirate gold. Esparza is the second largest canton in the province of Puntarenas, covering an area of 216.80 km, and with a population of approximately 35,000. The pace of life is relaxed. It is not unusual to see horses being ridden in the street. The town itself is off the tourist trail. However, the nearest beach for surf and relaxation is only 20 mins (14kms) away. Within a distance of 25 kilometers, you can also find canopy tours as well as the world-famous attractions of Puntarenas, including a marine park and a newly renovated marina. Likewise, the nearest national park, Carara, is only an hour s drive away.

Participating teachers enable students to form relationships with someone from another background and culture, and the teachers can learn different teaching methods and techniques. You will be taking different classes of about four to five classes a day. SITUATION

An area of unspoilt natural beauty, framed by snowcapped Himalayan peaks. The capital of Sikkim, Gangtok, reflects this tiny state s extraordinary ethnic diversity. In the crowded city which spills precariously down a ridge, Lepchas (the region s original inhabitants) live alongside Tibetans, Bhutias, Nepalis and Indians from the plains. Though now full of modern structures, Gangtok s Shangrila aspects can still be experienced in pockets of the city and in its alpine environs. Until 1975, Sikkim was a kingdom with the status of an Indian Protectorate. It was ruled by the Chogyals Buddhists of Tibetan origin, whose dynasty began in the 17th century. However, the British Raj s policies of importing cheap labour from neighbouring Nepal for Sikkim s rice, cardamom and tea plantations drastically changed Sikkim s demography, soon Nepali Hindus constituted 75 per cent of the state s population. In 1975, the population of Sikkim voted overwhelmingly to join the Indian Republic, ending the rule of Palden Thondup, the last Chogyal.
