Brief description and main aims : Arsol Preschool is a preschool for children aged between 9 months and 3 years old, which is recognized as being a Health Policy School, therefore its main aim is to encourage a healthy school environment. Additionally, Arsol has initiated the project Green flag , as a means to become more environmentally friendly. — Main Activities : The preschool has two main departments: Kisustofa = Kitten room (24 cgildren of mixed ages and 6 staff members)Bangsastofa = Teddy bear room (24 children of mixed ages and 6 staff members) The preschool also has a sports hall and fully functioning kitchen. — Volunteer tasks : The volunteer s main tasks consist of spending time with a group of children and caring for them. This is a great learning opportunity, as he/she will need to find expressive activities to do with the children, especially before learning Icelandic i which tends to happen quite quickly because the children speak Icelandic to him/her. The volunteer is always supported by the staff, especially at the very beginning. Having a young foreigner allows the children to meet people from different cultures and to be exposed to different languages at an early age, which is one of the reasons why the presence of an international volunteer is so desired and appreciated. — THE SCHOOL is closed for summer holidays for 4 weeks from the second week of July until the first week of August.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

The volunteer will most likely live with other volunteers or with a host family. The volunteer might have to share a room with another volunteer of the same gender if placed in the AUS flat. Volunteers that live with a host family will have their own room and their food will be provided by the host family. The school is about 30 minutes bus ride from the flat that AUS has rented for the volunteers and most of our host families are also very centrally located in Reykjavik. The volunteer should find it easy to travel to and from work. The volunteer will be provided with a bus card.

SITUATION

The preschool is located close to the center of Reykjavik.

BESOIN SPÉCIAL

TRAVAIL

Program DescriptionThis project is mainly conducted for migrant children in the age group of 4-13 yrs who live with their families in the slums located on the periphery of the cities. The indoor and outdoor school was established because of the population of migrant laborers are increasing day by day, which has been the tradition in Goa since the last few years. The direct and negative impact of this tradition is to teach the children of the schooling age. They have to drop out of their schools for 4-5 months every year, as their families migrate. Most of the migrants are from far away regions of Northern India (eg., Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Kolkata etc). This migrant community sets up tents on the outskirts of cities such as this village and live there for almost a year depending on the jobs they find. The longer they stay back, the longer the children do not get the opportunity to go to school, thus they end up working at a very tender age to gain extra income for their families. Therefore, the main objective of this project is to encourage these migrant children and give them the opportunity to continue their schooling with us.Despite the fact that, there is a public school already in the vicinity, it doesn t seem effective due to various reasons such as:The community s understanding that education is less importantThe distance to the school (5km), where the children find it difficult to walk as there are no local transpo

You can also use the kitchen facilities to cook for yourself or eat out at any of the local restaurants.

SITUATION

Consistently ranked among India s top tourist destinations, Goa is the ideal place for first time travelers and adventurers alike to acclimatize to a different culture. From caves behind waterfalls to villages hidden in sandy coconut forests, there is always something more waiting to be rediscovered. The mountain ranges and spice plantations enhance the beauty of this glorious state. Apart from its natural beauty, this former capital of Portuguese India and UNESCO World Heritage site has a lot to offer in terms of architecture with churches, cathedrals and forts abounding. Quick Overview : Engage with the local Chinese kindergarten/preschool in this town as a teacher for its young children…if you love being with kids, this program is for you Taking part in the program is a great way to learn more about Chinese culture and engage with the local community. You will work together with local staff in the caretaking of it s Preschool s children, teaching English and organizing their daily activities. — Program Description: Engage with the local children through this rural kindergarten programYou have the power to enlarge their horizons, enthusing them about school and even teaching them some basic english, a skill that will be invaluable as they grow into adulthood. You ll find the children are about 4-6 years old. They are mainly from the poor villages in and around the area and you can expect they will be very excited to see you, as you may be one of the few westerners they have ever metLike most kindergartens throughout the world, the teaching method here is informal, and the children will want to play with you more than be taught in a formal sense. If you can start to get them enthused about coming to school, and perhaps give them a few very basic English phrases such as simple greetings, you will have done a great job – and hopefully an enjoyable one tooAs a helper in the Kindergarten and Pre-school program, you may like to provide assistance to the Care Centre Manager in several ways:- Help look after the children s well being and hygiene.- Provide general assistance to the teachers- Play with the kids- Design and lead some games in English. — Program Duration and Availability: Min duration (weeks):1. — Aims and Objectives: Give you an authentic and rewarding experience in child-care, Provide assistance to the local child care program. — Schedule, Monday to Friday: You can expect to teach for for about 10 hours a week. A typical day could look like:- Breakfast- Morning: working as teacher / nurses assistant , to be with the kids. either teaching or play.- Lunch- Afternoon: Preparation for next day s classes- Dinner. — This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
