The summer months will involve much more emphasis on outdoor and gardening activities (weeding, cutting grass etc.), maintaining the vegetable garden and surrounding fields and pathways, general maintenance work, much of the day will be spent outdoors. The colder winter months will include activities such as gathering firewood, maintenance of the path and the stone walls, and rainy days would be spent indoors painting, woodwork, and general house maintenance. All throughout the year, volunteer look after animals (feeding, cleaning), get involved in household duties and in making yogurt. When volunteers arrive they re shown all the various types of work. People may change jobs to avoid the monotony and give the volunteers the opportunity to learn about many different aspects of rural living. There are usually 5 to 10 international volunteers at the same time at the project.Volunteers also assist in the farm s cafe, which is located in Cork City centre for generally 1 to 2 days a week. Duties include dealing with the public, making coffee, selling local farmers products and keeping the cafe clean and tidy. The cafe get generally busy on Fridays and Saturdays. Transport will be provided in and out of the city. Volunteers also share cooking and cleaning duties at the project accommodation. The number of working hours is approximately 30-35 hours per week and is flexible from day to day. Volunteers can expect to work 5-7 hours a day on their project, 5 days a week. Sundays and Mondays are generally off. Volunteers are expected to be proactive on their placements, are expected to keep busy and to use their initiative. Working on a farm, they can expect to spend some time outdoors both in sunshine and in rainy/cold conditions, so appropriate clothing is essential. The farm owner and his wife guide and support the volunteers throughout their programme. They have been welcoming and supervising volunteers for over 20 years and live in the main house with their two children. The farm owner is the main mentor and discuss with volunteers on a regular basis to discuss how they are progressing. As supervision is not always available, it is important that volunteers are able to work on their own as well as in a team. New ideas are welcome and encouraged.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

On their first night, volunteers are staying in a hostel in Cork city (dorm room). From day 2, volunteers are living on the project facilities. Volunteers live on the farm in the basement of the main house which is a large period house (Georgian style). Volunteers will share a room with other volunteers living there. The living conditions are simple and basic. Male and Female rooms are separate. On occasion, volunteers can have their bedroom in a house located just outside of the main house. All heating is from the wood-burning stoves. Therefore, if a hot shower is desired, one must learn how to build a fire and keep it burning throughout the day. A wood-burning sauna is also present on the farm. When a volunteer arrives, the first thing they must learn is how to light and keep a fire/stove going, as their comfort here will depend on it (especially in the winter). They will be shown how to perform all tasks asked of them and are encouraged to ask questions if they do not understand. There is an Internet connection and wi-fi available at the house. However, the connection is not always reliable and live communication through the Internet (e.g. Skype) can often be challenging. A communal kitchen is used where volunteers are responsible for preparing their own meals together. Food is provided by the project. Shopping is done once a week for commodities that cannot be provided by the farm. The project does not buy chocolate, sweets, toiletries, alcohol, cigarettes, or anything other than the basic requirements.

SITUATION

The farm is situated in the county of Cork in a beautiful rural area with green fields, hills and woodlands, between Cork city and Macroom. The farm is quite isolated but volunteers have regular access to Cork City on Wednesdays to Saturdays (cafe opening days). Transport in and out of Cork City for work in the farm s cafe will be provided free of charge. Transportation to and from the Macroom bus station is guaranteed upon initial arrival and final departure from the project. Buses to Tralee, Cork and Killarney are available from Macroom, and transport to other cities is available in Cork. Bus ticket prices are subject to change, a one-way ticket from Macroom to Cork City costs around euro12. Volunteers have two days off per week. During their free time, volunteers can discover Cork city, a friendly and vibrant city with many festivals and cultural events taking place all year round. They can also visit some the many attractions that County Cork has to offer or explore the Wild Atlantic Way which starts in Kinsale, located only 30 min from Cork.

BESOIN SPÉCIAL

Volunteers are required to be adaptable, flexible people who like working outdoor and get their hands dirty The must be over 18 when the project starts. They will join a group of volunteers comprised of people from different backgrounds, countries and cultures. Everyone involved in the project live as a community. TRAVAIL

Many NGOs and nonprofits in India are often understaffed and overstretched in terms of human resources. The grassroots organizations in particular, often lack the funds to dedicate personnel for knowledge management. Although well versed in the vernacular of the region and experts in their own field of work, staffs in many NGOs and nonprofits finds it quite challenging to document their activities in English. Yet this knowledge management process is an integral function of any organization.Volunteers interested in this field of work will be involved in:-Designing and creating content for the organization s offline and online communication platforms. This may include annual reports, brochures, blog articles, website content, social media platforms, press releases among others.-Research, either through primary or secondary data collection, on impact of program implementation, feasibility of program action plans etc., as per the needs of the organization.-Documentation: this may include report writing, putting in place documentationprocedures, recording organizational program activities, among others.

Historically, South India has an impressive cultural heritage and is home to 38 approved World Heritage sites in India. It has many significant temples which were built by the Hoysala, Chola and Chalukya dynasties of kings. South India boasts of having 2 styles of rock architecture, the pure Dravida style of Tamil Nadu and the Vesara style (Karnataka Dravida style) present in Karnataka. The monuments of Hampi, the palaces of Mysore and Bengaluru, the Charminar of Hyderabad, the Meenakshi temple of Madurai, Sravanabelagola, Belur, Halebidu, Tanjore and other cultural delights are frequented by millions of tourists every year. The men wear a dhoti, which could be either white or colourful, with typical South Indian patterns or designs. However, due to the modernisation of India, most of the population wear more casual clothing and have also adopted the Western style of clothing, especially in cities.Rice is the staple diet, while fish is an integral component of coastal areas like the state of Kerala and the city of Mangalore, which are known for their seafood. The little children stay all day long there, as it works as a kindergarten too; the older children attend school part time and the rest of the time they have activities at the project or outside. The staff is considered as a family by them. The project is open all day long; it has a simple structure, with a big building with common spaces, rooms for activities and meetings, kitchen and dining room, bedrooms and the kindergarten; outside there is a little park and open space to play. Brief description and main aims : The Clinic, operated by the Nature Health Association of Iceland since 1955, is a place of choice for all those who are in need of rehabilitation, building up strength or simply rest. The basic philosophy of the Clinic is to build up the client s health and sense of well-being and let the individual realize that only he/she is responsible for his/her own health. The Clinic emphasizes the learning of preventive measures in order to avoid various possible illnesses and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Consumption of alcohol or tobacco is not allowed on the premises. — Volunteer tasks : In the Clinic the volunteer will work in gardening and greenhouse work from March to October, and help in the kitchen from November to February. If help is needed in the kitchen during the summer months, then the volunteer can expect to be asked to work there as well. One of the tasks where the volunteers are sometimes involved with the patients is when they are being driven around in a wheelchair and/or a car. Depending on the situation, the volunteer may also sometimes assist the staff in giving the patients hot baths and mud baths.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

The volunteer will live in a flat in the Clinic, with the other people living there, and have his/her own room. The volunteer will have all food in the project, and get in addition to that food money for the weekends. The food in the clinic is vegetarian food, with fish twice a week.

SITUATION

The present horticultural and greenhouse town Hveragerdi, with about 2000 residents, started developing in 1902, when a carding factory was built by the waterfall Reykjafoss. At that time it was a part of Olfus County. The natural thermal area in the centre of town was harnessed for the heating of greenhouses and dwellings. Nowhere else in the country are there more greenhouses in one spot than in Hveragerdi. Many people living in the capital area make weekend trips to the town to buy flowers, tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables. The farmers have prolonged the growing period with artificial lighting and thus limited the need for import of these products during winter. Many foreign visitors are quite astonished to see the inhabitants walking about taking care of their daily chores with all this boiling hot water under their feet and the earth shaking every now and then. All services for tourists are rendered in the town and many recreational opportunities are offered. The town also boasts a very good hotel with a golf course, a health resort (HNLF) and good trout and char rivers in the area. Many renowned artists and authors live in town. Hveragerdi received its municipal rights in 1987.
