Hiiumaa according to the Nordic sagas emerged from the Baltic Sea as a small islet more than 10 000 years ago. The island of Hiiumaa was first mentioned in historical documents as a deserted island called Dageida in 1228. The first inhabitants settled down at the end of the 13th century. Nowadays Hiiumaa is the second biggest island of Estonia with the area of 965 sq. km and the population around 10 000. It has many historical and nature sights, and there are kind people known for their hospitality and good sense of humor. The island is referred as a remote area of Europe, so EstYES feels particularly proud developing international voluntary projects for dozen of years there. Also, for years EstYES has been cooperating with farms all over Estonia for solidarity, respect and practical support to local people who work in agricultural sector keeping traditional life style and developing new eco-farming despite of all difficulties. Alliksaare Farm is one of such projects. This is an organic farm promoting sustainable lifestyle, and this camp is proposed for volunteers who appreciate and share its values, want to learn more about it and to help hard working people. In addition to agricultural activities, Alliksaare Farm has another important task taking care of coastal meadows which are international birds migration area under protection of NATURA Programme. Watch the short movies of last year camp here http://vimeo.com/55764079 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEAc2Sch6f8

Generally, the work will be to take care and maintain the pastures located by the sea (clearing around the pastures, building or removing fences, repairing fences). Another work is cleaning the coast nearby the farm from rubbish brought by storms. There can be some work for preparing food for cows for winter time. In Farm you can work with horses, take care of them and together with owner train horses. Moreover, if you have some experience and interest you can ride horses. The work will be mainly outdoors. The working time will be around 6-8 hours a day. Work will be done under the supervision of the local host as well as independently.

Worldwide Friends Iceland (WF) was founded in 2001 as a non-governmental, non-profit organisation promoting nature and peace-oriented activities among people interested in spending time in Iceland as volunteers. The main activities offered by WF Iceland are work- and educational camps, exchange programs and seminars related to environmental protection. Our activities are suitable for anyone over the age of 18.Today the endeavour of attaining world peace has become a tangible possibility and the development and strengthening of bonds of cooperation and friendship through contact with people from other countries and cultures has proven to be one of the most fruitful means of achieving understanding and unity among nations. Worldwide friends main aim is to increase intercultural understanding through offering foreign volunteers the opportunity to take part in nature and peace-related activities. For volunteers coming to Iceland, such projects will give them a unique opportunity not only to explore and directly interact with Icelands unique culture and landscape, but also to work with other international volunteers and residents in challenging and unfamiliar contexts. This interaction between unspoiled nature and people from different backgrounds provides the participants with invaluable opportunities to learn more about themselves as individuals, their international fellows, other culture and the human and natural richness of Mother Earth. These are all unique opportunities for building bonds of unity and understanding between societies around the world.

TRAVAIL

Volunteers will be cleaning the coastline in different parts of the island and help recycling the plastic which we are collecting there. Most of the mornings during the program we will have workshops for two hours about the sustainable goals with a special focus on climate changes. The issue of global warming is well known all over the world. Humanity must act in a more environmentally friendly way. The main goal of this project is to improve the environmental education and consciousness of the projects participants. The clean up the coastline is the main task but we will also plant trees during the camp. Planting trees becomes a very useful action against climate change because trees absorb carbon dioxide, clean the air and prevent erosions. Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, but hopefully, the weather will be nice most of the time. This is a perfect camp for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges. Working hours are about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

Worldwide Friends volunteers will be going from Reykjavik on the first day of the project to BrE and then later on to RaufarhEfn and Stodvarfjordur. The houses are all fully equipped, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.Food is included for the duration of the workcamp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from homePlease keep in mind that there will be other volunteers in the same houses at the same time as your group.

SITUATION

During the project you will travel around Iceland starting in Reykjavik, spending twelve days in our sustainable centre in the Northwest, two weeks in RaufarhEfn near to the Arctic circle and two weeks in StEdvarfjErE(ur in the east of IcelandReykjavik is a city full of energy, just waiting for you to experience it. Powered by heat from the earth below, with ever-changing weather sweeping across the landscape, its natural features are matched by the energy of its residents. Think of the denominators of a great city – fun, culture, nature, clean air – Reykjavik has them in spades. All the advantages of a modern, forward-looking society are complemented by the beautiful natural setting. In a country of only just over 300,000 people, the Reykjavik Capital Area has a population of about 200,000. However, since its the only major city in the country, Reykjavik has a lot of the amenities that you would only expect to find in a much larger centre elsewhere in the world. BrE the sustainable centre of Worldwide Friends is near to the crossroads to the West, South and North of Iceland in the area of Hrutafjordur which is a 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra. In the neighbourhood you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, beaches full of driftwood, SnEfellsnes peninsula, glaciers in the highlands, waterfalls, strong rivers, canyons, and craters. The purpose of the centre is to protect the nature in the area and to raise the awareness of sustainability among the locals and the visitors which are coming to the area. The house is more than 1.000 mI and has 16 double rooms, two kitchens, several bathrooms and common areas, rooms for workshops and galleries. It has its own generator to produce electricity for heating and daily use. The generator is broken at the moment but will be active later on this year. The village of RaufarhEfn is the community that lies farthest north in Iceland. It is located in the eastern part of Melrakkasletta close to the Arctic Circle. The population of RaufarhEfn is about 200 and most of the people there earn their living from fishing and fish processing. The harbour is very beautiful and partly shaped by nature itself. A wide and untouched open area surrounds the village with a lot of birds and varied vegetation. In summer one will observe wild migratory birds within the village being a part of the village life with the villagers most often waking up in the morning to the songs of birds. The coastline with its inlets and creeks is filled with driftwood and reaches out into the Arctic Sea. Away and on the surface of the sea various sea-birds will be spotted and an occasional seal. On the beach waders strut and inland on the grassy moorlands there are dozens of lakes filled with trout. In the vicinity many species of ducks, waders and species that favour heaths and moorlands may be observed. The first one consists on mapping the shore with drones and cameras to identify the conditions of the beach. The data will be used to improve the impact of our work and to maximize the resources. We are conducting a long-term program of beach cleaning and the data will be crucial for scientific research. The second phase is the beach cleaning.

SITUATION

Your program will start in Reykjavik, spending two weeks in our sustainable centre in the Northwest, one week in RaufarhEfn near the Arctic circle and one week in StEdvarfjErE(ur in the east of Iceland.Reykjavik is a city full of energy, just waiting for you to experience it.

Within the project we will learn about green energy, sustainable householding, waste treatment, nutrition, the effects of consumption and lots more. If you want to change something, develop solutions, or inspire others, you must understand the issues and tasks first. In addition to the theoretical part, we are going to practice sustainable work.

MS Denmark has a long history of sending volunteers, organizing work camps and study courses. We are part of ActionAid International, and we fight globally against inequality by supporting marginalized people in fighting for their rights and organizing to break the structures which holds them back in poverty. We also organize and facilitate cultural meetings, as we believe this can bring about understanding, respect and international solidarity.

TRAVAIL

Environmental Summer CourseJoin us in Bolivia and make a difference for people and the environment. At the summer course in Bolivia you will learn about culture and society, while also working together with other international volunteers. You will plant trees and help creating a vegetable garden in a slum area in the outskirts of Cochabamba. This programme will also be a great opportunity, if you want to learn Spanish Experience the mountain peaks of the Andes, a strong indigenous culture and a beautiful country where you can experience both the jungle, mountains and the salt desert. Interesting and inspiring learningThe summer course in Bolivia is for you, if you are passionate about the environment and climate and would like to help improving the conditions for the poorest Bolivians. In the Mercado Campesino slum, we will create a green area together with the residents where they can grow vegetables and thus get better nutrition. We will also plant trees in order to counter deforestation and create a greener local environment. The green area will belong to the community and will be a much-needed gathering place for the residents. The volunteer work will be combined with exciting seminars where we will learn about Bolivias many different indigenous cultures and how their worldview can inspire an alternative view and idea of nature. You will learn about the biggest environmental and climate challenges in Bolivia today, focusing both on the highlands and the Amazon. You will also have the opportunity to learn Spanish. The group will be divided into smaller groups depending on your current level of Spanish. You do not need to have experience with Spanish beforehand in order to participate. You will be taught by Bolivian teachers and you can try out your newly acquired skills when meeting with local Bolivians during the course. During the programme we will also travel outside of the city to the small villages of El Valle Alto where most people are farmers and speak the language Quechua. We will learn about how environmental and climate change affect their lives. However, we will also get time to experience the amazing nature of the mountains. Cross-cultural exchangeWorking in the slum creates new bonds and opportunities to get to know Bolivians. You will learn some Spanish, so you can try starting a conversation yourself and learn about what hopes and dreams people living in the slums have. The children are always ready for a football match and there is plenty of room to take initiatives and start activities for them. We will also meet with local students from the citys university, who live a completely different life than in the slums. We will discuss and share experiences from their and our lives as young people. The programmeMost of the programme will be focused on volunteering. We want to get something done while we are in Bolivia. However, there should also be time for you to travel and to learn. The classes are complementary to the voluntar

MS Denmark has a long history of sending volunteers, doing work camps and global courses. We are part of ActionAid, and we fight against inequality by supporting marginalized people in fighting for their rights and organizing to break the structures which holds them back in poverty. We fight for the human rights of refugees in both Denmark and internationally.

TRAVAIL

Global Summer Camp: Refugees in EuropeWe live in times when Europe is closing in on itself. Fences and walls are being built, refugees are being interned and repatriated, and several European governments are challenging the human rights conventions in a hunt for votes. In MS Denmark, we are appalled by the fact that this is Europe s reaction to the so-called refugee crisis . At the same time, we can see how people with refugee background are being talked about in stead of talked with. We would like to change that. Therefore, we decided to organize a trip focusing on the conditions of refugees in Europe. We decided to travel along the route that many hundreds of thousands of refugees have taken from Europe s outer borders through the Balkans to Germany and Denmark. With the aim of learning about the conditions from the perspective of refugees, from the perspective of several different European countries, and to be inspired to act. Many of us don t know what it means to be forced to migrate. But maybe our perspective will change if we see with our own eyes what refugees are exposed to on their way from the south to the north of Europe? You can definitely learn some from reading and watching the news, but we think we can learn more from meeting people and listening to their stories. During the camp, we try to listen and create spaces for dialogue and community. We listen to people with refugee background, to NGOs and experts within the field, and try to get to know each other across differences. We believe that the conversation between us is the first step to breaking down divisions and creating change. Join usThe camp will be moving from Copenhagen, Denmark through Europe to Greece, with stops in Germany, Serbia and Greece. We travel by train, bus and ferry through Europe. It gives a sense of the long distances that one has to overcome to get to Denmark when traveling over land. All camp participants will travel on an interrail ticket, and there will be plenty of time to get to know each other well and play a game of cards or sing a song together in the train compartment, while watching the changing landscapes through the window. Along the route, we will also travel some long stretches where we sleep over in a train sleeping compartment. We will stop on the way – and gain new insightOn our journey, we will make stops at cities and places to learn about the conditions of the refugees, the political framework and how the influx of refugees is handled. We listen to the refugees own stories, and try to see Europe through their eyes. You will gain a unique knowledge of migration and asylum policy in Europe, and experience the debate unfolding in countries with widely different political climates. We also visit places on the map we rarely see – and which Europe seems to have completely forgotten. We will be inspired to act together in new ways when we meet cool volunteers and refugees who take action and believe in change. You can join no matter your p
