PARTENAIRE

This is the nineteenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organises a series of International Photography projects. In 2010 we also began offering these camps for teenagers. Throughout the year, participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-focused learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations, and creating conceptual frameworks that highlight each participants individual style.

TRAVAIL

Note that this is a learning/sharing camp and not a regular workcamp; this project has a smaller volunteer work part and emphasises the personal learning process over the community impact. We may be able to organise some outdoor voluntary work, but it depends on our partners and the weather conditions. Participants will have time to put the theory about photography into practice, exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant will be selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods, and laptops, if possible. While learning about photography, the participants have the opportunity to explore Icelandic culture through active participation: capturing it, engaging with it, and showcasing their work throughout the camp. One of our goals is to empower young people to use photography to highlight environmental and cultural subjects and issues.Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium to long distances during activities and working within a flexible schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions. This camp is open to participants aged 16 to 20. During their stay, SEEDS organises a programme that combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland and its culture, and having fun while exploring the city and some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Golden Circle and the Hot River hike excursions.

LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in ReykjavEk. The facilities are basic with an equipped kitchen, dining and living room, bathrooms, showers and a washing machine. As participants sleep in shared rooms with up to 6 people, everyone is expected to behave considerately. Please bring your own towel. Participants will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music or games from your country for the intercultural evening. Be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

SITUATION

ReykjavEk is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The worlds northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. ReykjavEk is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.Additional excursions (eg. the South Shore or Reykjanes Peninsula) can be arranged at discount fares depending on time availability, weather conditions, and the number of participants interested in joining them. Be prepared for cold or rainy weather and bring warm and/or waterproof clothing.

BESOIN SPÉCIAL

Participation fee EUR 650 (Euros), which needs to be transferred to SEEDS the latest one month before the camp starts to confirm the placement. It includes food, accommodation, transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), the Golden Circle and Hot river hike excursions. We will visit spectacular waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline, a volcano crater, the Thingvellir National Park and much more.

PARTENAIRE

The Environmentally Aware and amp; Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners. SEEDS collaborates with the Icelandic Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the City of ReykjavEk, and several local stakeholders on a project to clean up the Icelandic coastline. Partners include the Blue Army, an organisation dedicated to the cause of coastal cleaning, SORPA, the waste collection and amp; management entity in the capital area, and Whales of Iceland, an exhibit showcasing life-size models of whales and porpoises to educate the public about their lives and the impact of human activity on their existence.

These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or run solely by SEEDS. We also aim to involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and carry out their own trash cleaning projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. Volunteers can choose one of the two options below, included as hands-on volunteering activity in the camp:A day trip combining a visit to the HellisheiE(i geothermal power plant, a trash collection in the area, and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe. PARTENAIRE

This is the sixteenth year in a row that SEEDS offers projects in the Botanical Gardens in Reykjavik. The Botanical Gardens are an outdoor collection of living plants, founded in 1961 and it will celebrate its 65thanniversary in 2026. The gardens main role is to conserve plants for education, research and delight. They conserve about 5000 plant species in eight plant collections, which give an idea of the enormous diversity of vegetation in the northern temperate zone. The garden is open to the public and free of charge.

TRAVAIL

SEEDS volunteers will be doing general park maintenance and assisting the horticultural staff tending to the collection of perennials, alpine trees and shrubs in the garden. The garden organises guided tours and events throughout the summer, with which the volunteers may assist in their preparation. These special events are all related to the general aim and work of the garden and some of them are carried out at short notice. The work can be repetitive as general gardening tasks tend to be and most of it is outdoors. The project starts early every weekday: working hours are from 8:15 – 15:00, except on Fridays, when work finishes at 12:00 as a part of an ongoing research into shortening the working week. Volunteers have to be motivated to start work early in the morning, but in compensation they will have more free time in the afternoon. No previous experience is necessary, but the work requires patience and good physical condition as it may be tiring. As it is outdoors, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The social cooperatives I Locandieri were born from the idea of cooperation between individuals and institutions, with the mission of generating social and economic value for the benefit of as many people as possible. They offer services to people, especially migrants, and since 2008 they have been welcoming migrants in two communities, including minors and families. One of their missions is to give new life to the confiscated property. Over the years they have given back to the community places confiscated from crime, transforming them into communities for migrants and sports facilities for children, young people and migrants living in Castelvetrano.Il Giardino delle Arance is another confiscated property that has been returned to the community: a small building from the late 18th century with three hectares of land that has been renovated to become a home for minors; a cottage that will become a space-lab for the processing of home-grown agri-food products and a shop to sell the garden s produce. Outside, there are 2 hectares of citrus groves and 1 hectare of land where an intensive organic vegetable garden has been created to implement an ambitious socio-economic project.
