This project is actively working for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), organized together with the local group since 2019. This village has been welcoming Ohenro (pilgrims) who visit 88 temples in Shikoku since long time ago. The pilgrims walk through this village before visiting Kakurin-ji temple; the 20th temple out of 88 temples of the Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage. However, there are problems which should be solved such as aging and depopulation of the community these days, and locals haven t been able to find solutions for those problems. Worldwide Friends (WF), was founded in 2001 as a non-profit organization promoting nature and peace-oriented activities for volunteers wanting to spend some time in Iceland. Our main theme for this year is to give education about the 17 Sustainable Goals of the United Nations and to clean the whole coastline of Iceland. The main activities that we offer are workcamps, seminars, local events, and exchange programs suitable both for young people and adults.
TRAVAIL
The heart of the SElheimar ideology is to give all individuals a fair chance and to maximize their potential. By focusing on individuals possibility instead of their limitations, SElheimar aims to create the space for each resident to take every opportunity that arises for each person to grow and develop. Versatility is the strength of SElheimar so people with special needs that reside here will always be the center of the community. This works through the idea of reverse integration: those without special needs adapt to the abilities of those who do, they can work together to make their community of an equal and sustainable one. The foundation of the ideology of SElheimar derives from the visions and lifework of Sesselja herself. The main work in this camp will be in forestry called Eilur and also in the greenhouses which are called Sunna. Volunteers will be working in the greenhouses planting and harvesting vegetables, doing weed control and sometimes you will also be gardening. The work might involve work around the property painting or fixing things. During the winter volunteers will also have to help remove snow and keep the walk paths clear for the residents.Working hours are 09.00 to 16.00 with one hour break for lunch and there are some coffee breaks as well. Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you dont like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change. It is a community where people with or without special needs live and work together. SElheimar is a pioneer of practicing organic farming. In SElheimar there is an organically certified greenhouse, forestry, and arboretum. Other environmental-friendly projects in SElheimar include geothermal energy and recycling.
LOGEMENT & NOURRITURE

Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits and amp; vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. We try to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet by cutting down our meat intake and we usually encourage volunteers to try more sustainable foods.
SITUATION

The area around the house is great for hiking. We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs. Golden Circle is Included in the camp feeThis workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning. The area around the house is also great for hiking. The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) began in 2014 as the CYA Learning Center (CLC), with the aims to promote higher education among local children and teenagers, preserve and protect local cultural heritage, and improve the living conditions of local people.Volunteers have been the cornerstone of CSDs success. They started by building bamboo classrooms, designing our beautiful library and stocking it with thousands of books, donating computers for our computer classes, and teaching English, music, arts, and sports to local students. Remarkably, all our services are offered free of charge. In addition to supporting our non-formal education programs, volunteers play a crucial role in engaging the community. They help organize events and ceremonies to preserve local cultural heritage and foster community spirit. The presence of volunteers has brought significant changes to the lives of local people. Improvements in hygiene and sanitation, the growth of small grocery shops, and enhanced family incomes are just a few examples. At CSD, volunteers not only contribute to the community but also gain invaluable experiences. They learn about the local lifestyle, adapt to local living conditions, make friends, expand their global network, and discover their career and life goals. In essence, volunteers initiated CLC and have been pivotal in transforming the community while also experiencing personal growth and learning. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners for their continuous support and for sending us motivated volunteers

This project is actively working for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDGs 10 (Reduced Inequalities), organized together with Kyodo Gakusha since 2000, a cooperative community where people with various backgrounds such as mentally disadvantaged, people who are tired of city life, who want to learn farming, who want to live in the nature, etc. They have 5 communities in Japan incl. Maki and Tateya and grow animals and vegetables in ecological, organic way. Maki is located in a very isolated area (not accessible for cars and we have to walk 4 km in the mountains), so it once became an abandon village in 1970s and then, was revived by Kyodo Gakusha. Over 10 people incl. 2 families were living till several years ago, but less and less in these years (almost nobody in the winter), so vols. are needed even moreTateya is located on the hilly (less than Maki, but still a bit isolated) area where 30-40 members live and mainly do rice farming as well as growing cows and chicken.Outcome of this workcamp: In 2023, we had 4 short term workcamps and 1 LMTV project with 13 vols. who greatly contributed to their protecting the houses, farming and caring animals that was difficult to finish by the time they needed without volunteers See the long-term goal of this project as Local SDGs made by the previous project leader at https://www.slideshare.net/nice-workcamp/2019-ep3-188767935 (only in Japanese, sorry, but you can still enjoy the pictures)
TRAVAIL

On the other hand, since more and more people from overseas visit for the Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage locals are trying to find new ways for omotenashi (hospitality). Estonian people have lived in these lands since ancient times and ancient Estonians were known as a wise and mysterious people. They have been described as a nation of witches and sorcerers, and for good reason. While later periods of Estonian history can be learned about in a number of places across the country, the Viking Age (8th to 11th century) in our lands has not received much attention. The Viking Village is the result of one man s long-lived dream and the boldness and initiative of young enthusiasts. It all started in 2005, when the current chieftains of the Viking Village discovered an ancient and mysterious location on the scenic bank of the Pirita River, which could not have been a better place to build an ancient Estonian Viking village. The mission of the Viking Village is to give people a sense of what ancient life was like and to provide a place to relax and learn to know themselves as well as their environment. It is a place where you can take a break from fast-paced modern life and discover the Viking within yourself. The Viking Village is constantly being expanded and improved. Today, we have completed roughly half of the planned village, which means that there is at least as much to come More information: www.viikingitekyla.ee
